Players by the Numbers
Whenever it comes to sports, one thing that has always interrested me are the numbers that people wear on their backs. When I got into the Yankees, I really got into numbers, and who wears them, as the Yankees don't have names on their jerseys, only their numbers. So one day, I was surfing the net when I saw this thing on The Sporting News website called The 100 Day War Where you can vote for your favorite player of all time by the number that they wear. What you are about to see is who I voted for, or who I was too lazy not to vote for. Hope You Enjoy!!

Billy Martin was the manager of the Yankees a few times. He was famous for being fired over and over again. It sort of like an episode of Seinfeld where Steinbrenner is telling Costanza about all the people he had to fire, and one out of every 5 was Billy Martin. Chris Childs is the Nets point guard, playing on the wrong team.

2. Derek Jeter, Mike Gallego and Brian Leetch
Ahh, the great Yankee shortstops!! Jeter was proclaimed as the Yankees' future forever, until one day, he finally was called up to the Yankees. It was a June game in Seattle. It was great, although he was sent back to the minors. He started the 1996 seasn as the starter, and hasn't given up his position still. However, I do have fond memories of the shortstop stlyings of Mike Gallego. He's a versitle (yet old and often injured) player currently on the Red Sox. About Brian Leetch, despite the fact he's not having a good season, I forgive him as it must have been hard to inherit the job of being the captain of the Rangers after Mark Messier left.

Babe Ruth brought many championships to New York. Starks almost broght one to NY, but he choked. All I can think of when I think of him is game 2 of the 1993 eastern conference finals, vs. the chicago bulls , when he, a righty, had this amazing left-handed dunk over jordan and Horace Grant. (Horace Grant is worthy to have his name in capital letters, unlike jordan and the bulls)

4. Anthony Bonner and Lou Gehrig
Bonner spent a few years as a nice Role Player on the Knicks. Lou Gehrig was the Pride of the Yankees, a move which I've been waiting forever to be shown on Channel 11, as I want to see it.

5. Lirit Maslan (and Joseph Paul DiMaggio)
I remember this one time when I barely go out of the Merkaz Klita to go to work at Megdim Junior High. Except I was going to miss the buss. So, I was screaming to Lirit, who was at the bus, at the top of my lungs, "Hold the bus! Hold the Bus!!" Let me say she sure did hold the bus. I saw DiMaggio speak once on Mickey Mantle Day (See number 7) But Bob Costas said in Ken Burns' Baseball Documentary that his grandfather once said to him, "You never got to see DiMaggio. You never got to see the real thing."

He was named after Joesph Paul DiMaggio. The Yankees won the championship. Torre did a good job, although I do prefer Buck Showalter's system of replaceable parts. However, I choose to give Torre my full respect as he did bring a Yankees championshi in my lifetime (although I was 6000 miles away from the nearest TV that was showing the game live)

In late August 1996, my father and I were at a capacity crowd at Yankee Stadium, where they were revealing a monument for Mickey Mantle. It was a wonderful day. I heard wonderful speeches from Billy Crystal, Joe DiMaggio, and Bobby Murcer. However, the best words I heard from the day came came from my father. After a long battle I had with him, he told me that he decided that he was going to allow me to go on Year Course. I was very excited. Sure, I then had only 7 days to prepare for being away for 10 months, and sure the Yankees lost that game, but in my hear, I won. Thank you, Mick.

The other #8. Everyone gives the credit for Yogi Berra, but this man also had his number 8 retired by the Yankees.

He's an alternate captain who wears a letter A. I think all people named Adam should wear an A. Adam Oates of the Capitals wears one. The A really stands for Adam. Lirit's nephew should play hockey for this reason.

He should have worn the number 11. I enjoyed watching him broadcast Yankee games on channel 11, as well as his Money store commercials. Holy Cow!

11. Buck Showalter, Chuck Knoblouch and that Messier Guy
William Nathieniel Showalter III is my favorite Manager. He did a great job making the Yankees into contenders, although most of those people (including himself) are no longer in the Bronx. I hope he brings a championship to the arizona Moneybacks er... Diamondbacks. Now Messier is good. Although he screwed over all of New York by signing withe Vancouver, he brought the Rangers a Stanley Cup. About Knoblouch, I can't wait to see him at the stadium!!

I like Boggs. He eats chicken every day, and can still play a good 3rd base. I can't wait to see him when the Devil Rays come into town.

My greatest Jim Leyritz moment (since I missed the 1996 World Series) was his home run in game 2 of the 1995 Division Series against Seattle. Although they eventually lost that series, it was one of the greatest playoff series I ever watched.

I like Pat Kelly. Shame he's been injured to the point where he left to sign with Toronto. Hay, at least we now have Knoblouch.
